The Science of Making Science Accessible–and Funny

A Podcast Recommendation: Ologies with Alie Ward.

Curious minds deserve extra attention during this overwhelming time. When you’ve binge-watched all the TV series and movies that you can handle and are looking for another outlet for entertainment and information, podcasts are a great option. If True Crime is too gruesome, and the thought of consuming one more piece of breaking news is enough to ruin your day, there is a lighter and brighter pod that will satisfy.

Ologies by Alie Ward is considered a Science podcast – but if you, like me, are not so science-minded, do not let the classification deter you. Each week, science communicator Alie Ward interviews a different “-Ologist” – a scientist or expert in a very specific field of study. The episodes cover everything from Malacology (snails and slugs), to Ferroequinology (trains), to Kalology (beauty standards), and everything imaginable in between.

You’ll find that topics you previously had no interest in become riveting, as Alie’s unrelenting inquisitiveness and refreshing approach gift you with knowledge you never knew you needed.

There are moments of true laugh-out-loud humor, moments that will bring a tear to your eye, and moments that will give you a small burst of hope in an otherwise presently dark world. Her anthology of episodes is epic, so if you are unsure where to start, here is a list of some of my favorites:

If none of these particularly appeal to you, browse episodes by topic. However, I strongly encourage you to choose one you don’t think you’ll like. An hour – even one spent discussing the uses of pumpkins – flies by with Alie Ward at the helm.
